“How many rounds per game do you usually play?” asked Ciri.
“Two. I never lose a round. I’ve got the best cards in all of Kovir,” replied the Gwent fanatic.
“Listen, I’m on important business here, a Manticore. I don’t have time to play Gwent. But this tournament will award a new card to the winner, ‘Dandelion’s Lute’...” said Ciri.
“Yes! The special ability of the card is...,” Ciri quickly cut him off.
“I know what it can do. I need that card, you understand? And you’re going to get it for me. For a generous purse...,” Ciri pulled out a hefty purse and showed it to the gwent player.
The man grabbed the purse out of the witcheress’s hand.
As the tournament progressed, Ciri’s trusted new companion could be heard boasting about his card skills.
The quarter finals were now underway.
“I will counter you, I will stop any effect, any unit. Whatever card you choose now, you can’t beat me!” bragged the gwent pro.
His opponent, a famous dwarf blacksmith, had just suffered a terrible first round, and with only five cards remaining in his hand, his chances of winning were slim.
“You’ve been very lucky. You drew every card you needed,” replied the annoyed blacksmith.
“No luck here! Only skills and experience,” retorted the winner of the first round.
As he said that, Ciri’s player accidentally hit a few cards with his elbow. The cards fell on the floor, close to the opponent’s feet.
The dwarf picked up the cards and felt a small bump on one of them. He inspected it more closely.
“Marked! These cards are marked!” he yelled.
Officials came running in.
Atfer a brief look at the cards, the officials lifted the gwent player off his chair and carried him at the front door.
Here, as the witcheress Ciri approached, one could hear the inkeeper berating the cheater.
“Out! Take yer marked cards elsewhere, ye filthy lout! Ye’ll find only honest Gwenters ’ere!” he shouted.
Ciri watched as the inkeeper threw the young man on the stairs.
She continued on her path, not acknowledging the event.
As if she never had anything to do with it...
